To talk about our purpose, and our sport!
"The ocean has always been a salve to my soul ... but the best thing for a cut or abrasion was to go swimming in salt water. Later down the road of life, I made the discovery that salt water was also good for the mental abrasions one inevitably acquires on land. " -Jimmy Buffett

Sailing Foundation Board Meeting February 5, 2008
Present: Scott Boye, Peter and Susan Risser, Mary Blevins, Nigel Oswald, Barbara Bevens, Abbie Finney, Pam Gross, Dez! Bridgmon
Absent: Marilyn O’Connor, Peter and Christine Chan, Felipe Lopez
Guests: Ralph Hahn from Island Rec, Aaron Hayes, Marc Islam
Scott called the meeting to order at 5:37.
There are two corrections to the January minutes. First, the cost of the Youth Sailing class went from $145.00 to $200.00. The other is that Island Rec has purchased the books for the required boating safety course for sailing instructors, and the teaching assistants may borrow them.
Peter moved, Barb seconded to pass the January minutes as amended. Passed.
Ralph Hahn reported on expenditures of Island Rec for the sailing classes.
Treasurer’s report. We have gratefully received a $6,000.00 donation from the Kansas City Foundation.
Dez! will attend the Level 2 Coaches Seminar on March 1 at the Seattle Yacht Club.
There may be between 13 and 15 kids on the sailing team this year. The parent/sailor meeting will be on Feb. 25 at the Island Rec office.
The dock must be towed to Jackson’s Beach by April 19 in time for Friday Harbor to host the Double Handed Districts. Aaron and Nigel both have Boston Whalers to assist. Both varsity and junior varsity courses will be run. Aaron has a 37-foot power boat- we’ll need one to be alongside the float for support.
Dez! would like reports from each sub group for a newsletter.
Next year’s Cascade Lake campout will be September 12, 13, and 14.
The movie night Patrick Pillsbury hosted at San Juan Canvas netted us $367.00.
The summer schedule has been set. We will need to make the path to the beach for launching the boats.
April 16 through May 23 will be the Youth Sailing Class. There may not be an instructor chosen yet. Aaron will go talk to Sally to see if he could teach it.
Boat sponsorship: Scott has gotten commitments from two sources; Waterworks Gallery and San Juan Canvas Co.
Peter asked Aaron to give the board his sailing background, which is considerable.
Scott adjourned the meeting at 6:50.
