To talk about our purpose, and our sport!

"The ocean has always been a salve to my soul ... but the best thing for a cut or abrasion was to go swimming in salt water. Later down the road of life, I made the discovery that salt water was also good for the mental abrasions one inevitably acquires on land. " -Jimmy Buffett

Sailing Foundation Board Meeting March 4, 2008

Attending: Peter and Susan Risser, Scott Boye, Mary Blevins, Pablo Lopez, Peter and Christine Chan, Nigel Oswald, Dez! Bridgmon, Abbie Finney

Absent: Pam Gross, Barbara Bevens

Guests: Ralph Hahn from Island Rec, Kim Blake, Marc Islam

Scott called the meeting to order at 5:35.

Announcements: The new Vanguard has been rigged.

Peter moved, Susan seconded to approve the Feb. 5, 2008 minutes as written.
Passed unanimously.

Treasurer’s report. Peter handed Mary a $500.00 check from the Friday Harbor Sailing Club (for 2007). That makes the balance: General funds $10,975.48, Sailing team $2,864.24, Memorial funds $2,110.00, and
restricted $1,025.00.

Abbie has made contact the Charities Division of the State of Wa. They told her that if a non-profit takes in under $5,000.00 it doesn’t have to file. We need to add on the San Juan Island Sailing Team to our non profit papers as we fundraise for the Sailing Team.

Ralph Hahn reported from Island Rec. that there will be a board retreat about the La Farge Gravel Pit Park. They will put in for a conditional use permit. According to the Conservation District and D.N.R., the property is a large sand pile and is vulnerable for use.

Island Rec’s levy renewal will be in the fall of 2009. They will probably have a budget workshop mid to late September, 2008. Someone from the Sailing Foundation should go to see how this will impact the Sailing
Foundation. They will have lots of community input.

Sally Kerr is gone for 2 weeks so we don’t know whether there has been any new hire for instructors (like Youth Sailing).

Kim Blake is here because Barbara Bevens asked her to chair the auction for the sailing team lasagna dinner fundraiser. It will be after April 11 (after spring break) but the date is not set. Heidi and Barbara will do the dinner and Kim will do the auction.

The Sailing Coach Level 2 Seminar was last weekend. Dez! took it and learned lots and is looking forward to using some new techniques.

Aaron Hayes has volunteered to move the dock to Jackson’s Beach. Scott will talk to Aaron about moving it soon. April 19 and 20 will be the Double
Handed Districts and Youth Sailing starts right after spring break.

Women’s Class still does not have an instructor, but Peter has promised Sally that he will be the instructor if necessary.

Marilyn Nassman’s Solstice Party is not that far off, so we brought it up. We offer the use of our El Toro’s and the running of some races, and she uses the party as a fundraiser for the Sailing Foundation. Usually Gregg Krabbe, her son, moves the boats to the venue and afterward to Percich Pond for the beginning sailing classes. Scott moved, Susan seconded that, if asked, we authorize Peter to allow the use of the El Toro’s for Marilyn’s Solstice Party, which will probably be June 21, 2008.
Passed unanimously.

Marc Islam has again volunteered to run the Sailing Foundation area at the Children’s Festival this spring. Abbie will talk to someone with a 420 that will need work after the fair and may allow us to use it for the demonstration boat.

The Friday Harbor Sailing Club is offering a Rules Forum starting Wednesday, March 5, and will run Wednesday nights for the next 4 weeks at the San Juan Island Yacht Club from 7:30 to 9:30. Peter Risser is going to be discussing sail trim one of those nights.

Scott says we are going to do another round of fundraising. He passed around some labels for people to put on newsletters and personally deliver.

The Sailing Foundation donated to the Paidiea School Fundraising Auction sailing lessons for 2 adults on Sally Hawkins San Juan 24. Dez! will find out who won and they will set up an appointment with Scott.

Dez! reports there are many new kids on the Sailing Team this year, and we will have about 14 or 15 sailors. We need some eager volunteers to do boat maintenance on the Vanguard 15’s.

Kim offered that her husband is in the marine business and can be contacted about outboard engine repairs, etc.

Meeting adjourned at 6:46.

Next meeting will be Tuesday, April1, at the library.
