To talk about our purpose, and our sport!
"The ocean has always been a salve to my soul ... but the best thing for a cut or abrasion was to go swimming in salt water. Later down the road of life, I made the discovery that salt water was also good for the mental abrasions one inevitably acquires on land. " -Jimmy Buffett

Roger De Roos has given us a donation in the name of Ramsey Milne.
The treasurer is on vacation, so there is no treasurer’s report.
Island Rec report: Sally has given Peter an end-of-season report. There were 60 participants in classes this summer.
Cascade Lake report: The campout and sailing weekend went well and was well attended. The weather was perfect. Cloud McCauley offered to do next year’s signups with the advice and help of Mary Blevins.
Sailing Team report. The Team Racing students are about to finish the 6 week course. As of today three boats have been labeled with sponsor names and there will be pictures by the end of the week. The sailors have improved greatly in the last 6 weeks.
Catherine passed out a request for six students (3 girls, 3 boys) who are going to New Orleans. Each sailor will cover his own airfare. They are requesting we sponsor coach and chaperone airfare and luggage surcharge and the entry fee, which will be about $800.00. They will also make a presentation to the San Juan Island Yacht Club and to Roach Harbor for donations.
Scott moved, Susan seconded that we fund the coach and chaperone’s airfares and luggage surcharge and the entry fee, and that we discuss account disbursement when the treasurer returns. Passed. Dez! (coach) and Pablo (attendee in New Orleans) both abstained.
Peter gave a “presidential pep talk”. He was inspired by the speakers at the Community Foundation breakfast. The discussion was about strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to an organization
Strengths - We have a strong board
Weaknesses Only 1 salt water class this year
Enrollment down from 97 to 60
Opportunities Net shed
Making non racing sailing events happen
Collaboration with other agencies
Marketing our classes
In the process of burning up lots of gas and breaking a tow line in the failed effort of towing the float back to Friday Harbor and more gas getting it there later, the float needs to be re-evaluated. The hinge connections are also breaking.
Pam Gross called and resigned from the board, although she is willing to do special projects.
Peter proposed an additional meeting to discuss declining enrollment in classes on October 23. Barb offered Griffin Bay School for the meeting. Scott recommended the Great Oakes sailors come to this meeting.
Laser blade bags and rudders: We get a certain amount of free Magic Marine Gear with the Hinman boats. Scott thinks we will get Laser blade bags with them. The Hinman boats will come up with Scott from Oregon at the end of October.
Purchase of Open Bic: Scott and Mary will meet after her vacation and we will see whether we can/should buy one.
We will discuss the net shed status at the next meeting. Scott will make a wish list and will meet with Barb.
New business: If we are going to have the sailing team sponsored by Island Rec, we need to get the program to them for the winter guide. Scott moved, Barb seconded that we disengage the High School Sailing Team from Island Rec. and run it like we did the Team Racing. (We will need to do Labot and Industries reporting and fill in a form 990 for the internal revenue for the coach). The issue is tabled until the next meeting.
Martha Isbister and Shannon Calverly came from the canoe club. They are also interested in a new facility at the net shed, and at the urging of Peter and Susan, have make their wish list.
Several of the teenagers will be taking the sailing instructor classes when they are offered.
Adjourned 6:55.
The continuation of the board meeting of October 7, 2008 will be on Thursday, October 23 at Griffin Bay School on Blair Street at 5:30.
Agenda items:
Finish deliberating whether to assume the primary role in sponsoring the Sailing Team.
Continue strategies and procedures to reverse the declining enrollment in summer classes.
As time permits we will strategize about approaching the Port of Friday Harbor about reconstruction of the net shed.
If you cannot attend this meeting, please call Susan or Peter at 378-5448 or Scott at 472-1604 and let us know your opinions on theses issues. These are major topics and need full board participation.
Minutes from the meeting continuation of October 23, 2008.
Present: Barb Bevens, Peter and Susan Risser, Dez! Bridgmon, Pablo Lopez, Scott Boye, Peter and Christine Chan, Nigel Oswald, Abbie Finney
Absent: Marilyn O’Connor, Mary Blevins

Peter gave Scott a check for the Foundation from the SJIYacht Club. Scott told us that the Yacht Club has also approved $500.00 for the New Orleans sailors.
We started discussing the separation of the Sailing Team from Island Rec. Scott will get together with Mary to discuss L&I and Internal Revenue issues. Peter will check on CPR/First Aid classes. We’ll decide at thet next meeting.
Our enrollment has declined, as has the student body at the school. They are down from 990 to 846. In terms of the declining enrollment, Gordy suggested that we sponsor events to invite non-sailors to sail with Sailing Team members.
Scott asked to put together a committee to come up with marketing ideas. Dez and Pablo volunteered.
Peter proposed we make up the pictures and verbiage for the Island Rec. summer class schedule and hand it over to them ready to print. Peter will do market research in regards to kids going on from basic classes.
We talked about having a “regatta” after the week of Intermediate Sailing, perhaps taking the kids over to Orcas.
We will talk about marketing at the next meeting.
Net shed: We need to approach the POFH as a multi-user group who would like to use a renovated/rebuilt net shed.
