To talk about our purpose, and our sport!
"The ocean has always been a salve to my soul ... but the best thing for a cut or abrasion was to go swimming in salt water. Later down the road of life, I made the discovery that salt water was also good for the mental abrasions one inevitably acquires on land. " -Jimmy Buffett

Subject: September Minutes and October Agenda
Attending: Scott Boye, Nigel Oswald, Barb Bevens, Peter and Susan Risser, Abbie Finney, Dez! Bridgmon, Marilyn O’Connor, Mary Blevins
Guests: Marc Islam, Catherine Bevens, Maverick Blake, Felipe Lopez
Scott called the meeting to oder at 6:46.
Nigel moved, Abbie seconded to approve the minutes from August 5. Passed unanimously.
Nigel suggested that we might be able to buy non class legal Laser rudders from Intensity Sails and save the good ones, which seem to be irreplaceable right now, for regattas.
Treasurer’s report: We have a total of $24,779.79, of which $2,310.00 are memorial funds, $1,025.00 are restricted, $6,265.82 are sailing team, leaving operating funds of $15,178.97. All the Laser purchases have been paid for.
Scott moved, Peter seconded that Abbie and Mary rearrange the checking accounts so we can make some interest on them and avoid penalties from insufficient funds. Passed.
David McCauley has a V15 he might wish to sell, so Scott will check to see whether we have firmly committed to purchase the 2 Hinman boats.
Announcements: Peter reported the break-in at the net shed, in which the hasp was torn apart but nothing seemed to have been stolen. The Port crew has replaced the destroyed hasp with a good stainless one.
I.P.S. is doing away with their card purchases of fuel, but our account will still be continuing.
November 1 is the deadline for the Island Rec Winter program guide, so we will need to schedule the sailing team before that.
Old business: Felipe is very interested in our purchasing an Open Bic sailboat (we had a demo at Percich Pond for the beginning classes). He says it is a good challenge and a transition boat for the small kids at the pond. The budget committee will consider the purchase of one or more Open Bics. Dez! wanted to include little kids in some regattas after the classes, so this would be a good possible move.
Marty Percich’s letter: Barb reported that Ralph Hahn would go talk to Marty himself. We talked about doing an intense class schedule and have them all in a row with no vacant weeks in between to ease the length of our presence at the pond.
We have declining enrollment. One basic class did not go and we had only 1 intermediate class, and no advanced. Felipe thinks there is a waiting list at Island Rec for classes but nothing is done about it. We also discussed having 8 students in El Toros and 1 or 2 in Lasers or Open Bics in the same class. This will all be discussed in a Curriculum committee meeting.
Peter has suggested we do marketing for next year’s classes. Felipe will give Peter a CD with pictures from 2008 classes.
Dez! reports that Team Racing will run from September 2 through October 10, 2008.
There will be a Team Racing Regatta on Orcas Sept. 20 and 21.
Peter is trying to recruit safety boats for the team racing classes. Each week will have chalk talks at the net shed on Monday and Tuesday, and drills based on the weekly topic on Wednesday. There will be more drills and match racing on Thursdays and Team racing around the course on Fridays.. Dez! has text books for everyone on team racing.
Felipe and Katy will help out the first two weeks., Scott the next week, Peter the next and Peter will arrange the remaining weeks.
Marc Islam offered to manage a group of parents to see that parents would be there for the classes, if that would help.
The Southern Yacht Club web site says the facilities were not badly damaged, so the Great Oakes Regatta will be held there. Dez! will be taking 3 boys and 3 girls to New Orleans for it.
Dez! has a big issue with the Net Shed. The kayak racks were to be built at the sides of the south end, and instead there is a huge set of racks right down the middle. Scott and Barb and Marilyn will meet with Dave Halpern at the net shed sometime later this week.
A committee to discuss loaning or renting the boats will be chaired by Scott. Dez! and Nigel offered to be on the committee.
Membership committee: Peter and Christine Chan have compiled a list of members. Scott will work with them on membership renewal, etc.
We brought up the question of whether there may be a symbiotic relationship developed between us and a commercial venture to teach sailing. Mike Close has need of instructor(s) with some of his customers at the boat rental, and is concerned about the insurance cost to him of having an occasional instructor teach an occasional customer.
Meeting adjourned at 7:15.
