To talk about our purpose, and our sport!

"The ocean has always been a salve to my soul ... but the best thing for a cut or abrasion was to go swimming in salt water. Later down the road of life, I made the discovery that salt water was also good for the mental abrasions one inevitably acquires on land. " -Jimmy Buffett

San Juan Island Sailing Foundation Board Meeting December 1, 2009

Present: Scott Boye, Peter and Susan Risser, Barb Bevens, Catherine Bevens, Nigel Oswald, Abbie Finney, Mary Blevins

Absent: Tony Vivenzio

Staff: Dez! Bridgmon

Guest: Deb Eshelman

We started the meeting by stuffing membership renewal forms into envelopes.

Scott called the meeting to order at 5:44.

Peter moved, Barb seconded to accept the November minutes as written. Passed.

Deb left the room temporarily. Peter moved, Susan seconded to induct Deb Eshelman to the board. Passed unanimously.

Abbie gave a brief report on the subject of the value of Nigel’s R.I.B. She will take the information to Mike Close to get us a current market value.

Mary gave the treasurer’s report. We have $7,366.37 as an overall total, of which $1,873.64 is for general operating funds, $2,410.00 is the memorial fund, $2,210.23 is for the sailing team, and $872.50 is restricted.

Payment for the new Vanguard was discussed.

We talked about marketing the intermediate and advanced classes to kids who have taken the beginning classes. We talked about sending out a mailing to those kids/families near the end of June.

There was no sailing coach report.

Shannon Calverly has reserved a bunch of sites at Cascade Lake for the Labor Day weekend next year, but was unable to get #8.

A wide ranging discussion about how much to charge Island Rec for use of the boats ensued. Possibilities ranged from charging no boat fee to working up to an 8% value of the fleet within 5 years. No decision was made. Scott suggested that Peter, Deb, Dez! and Scott get together on December 8 at 5:30 at Peter and Susan’s to discuss boat rental strategy for Island Rec.

Scott adjourned the meeting at 7:00.
