Voice of the President2008 promises to be a good year for the Sailing Foundation. We looked into the Foundation’s future last December when we held a day-long retreat at the Friday Harbor Middle School Commons and work session with an excellent facilitator, Tony Vivenzio. We ultimately agreed on six areas or items that the board needs to pursue or work on to maintain and expand our functions in the community. Some of the items were obvious and straight forward such as improving the membership records and communications or updating the roles and job descriptions of board officers and committee chairs. Others range to more abstract and forward looking such as expanding into some sort of community sailing programs and working on the security of our “Home Base” at Jackson’s Beach. Even though fund raising and some expanded schemes for it are on the “to-do-list”, we are off to a good start with a Community Foundation grant for $1,000 that will send four of our high school students to Sailing Instructor Training. Then we received a totally unexpected anonymous donation of $12,000 which will help us keep up with upgrading the fleet. District Champs. Apr. 19-20th

What are we up to?We know, we know it has been quite a while since the public has heard any word from the San Juan Island Sailing Foundation but we are here now to let you know why we have been so silent. We have been busy! Our last year has been full of new board members and the restructuring of the organization. Just this last December, Tony Vivenzio, stepped in to help with our strategic planning and we are now headed down a new path that will only make the board, the members, and the Foundation stronger. We have added a few new board members that have added a huge amount of knowledge and experience that the board was in need of. We all knew that we needed new faces and new ideas brought to the table and that is what all of the members are doing. Peter and Christine Chan have taken on the challenge of keeping and maintaining the membership. Abby Finney has come on board to help with fund raising, Barbara Bevens, our sailing team MOM, comes to us with her connection to the schools will help keep us on track with all the youth sailors and sailing team members. Nigel Oswald, a new board member, brings with him a background in sailing and has taken on the task of Community Sailing. He will be coming up with creative ways of using the fleet of boats that we currently have so there are more opportunities for member usage. Returning board members are Peter Risser, as President, who does double duty with the responsibility of our the El Toro Fleet that is used for all the beginning sailing classes and helps coordinate with Island Rec for instructors and the writing of the class material. Susan Risser returns as our faithful Secretary. She too helps with the El Toro fleet and all the little things that seem to slip through the cracks and is the master of the English language. Without her help you would not understand any of this news letter or anything else that could be published by the SJISF. Mary Blevins returns for the next three years as our favorite book keeper. She is also the one responsible for all the fun and coordination of the Cascade Camp Out that wraps up the sailing season each September. Scott Boye is still with us as Vice President and also the one in charge of the transportation and maintenance of the Vanguard fleet. He also helps Peter with the classes and Nigel with the community sailing events. Marilyn O’Conner has signed on for another three years to help maintain our relationship with the Port of Friday Harbor. She also helps by bringing good business and insurance minded questions to the conversation. Last but not least, Dez! Bridgmon is still with us doing double duty as the new Sailing Team Coach and helping the Chans with the membership through fund raising, special events and all communications for the Foundation. There are many places that we could use help. If you are interested in helping make decisions about the future of the Foundation then you are invited to board meetings the first Tuesday of the month at the Library at 5:30 p.m. |

Partnerships with the SJISFPartnerships...are vital for our success. Our mission and our passion are to provide opportunities to learn to sail and enjoy the magic of a sailing boat. Some of our partners are obvious and well known. We work with Island Rec, whose mission is to provide recreational programs for our island community. The Sailing Foundation and Island Rec work together to guide and support several kinds of sailing programs, making sailing available to all ages at an affordable cost. The Sailing Foundation assists with class planning and provides a fleet of capable and safe boats. We have an ongoing relationship with The Port of Friday Harbor who has ready access to the shoreline. They own the land and the net-shed that houses our sailboats at Jackson’s Beach. We also are grateful to the Percich family who, for many years now, have provided access to Percich Pond where beginner sailing classes are held in fresh water. We are working to foster stronger relationships with our schools, with other water oriented sports and recreation groups, and with outdoor educators. Our sailing programs are all about having fun on the water while learning basic skills and safety and the value of teamwork. SJISF Boat Sponsorship ProgramGetting kids in boats is what the San Juan Island Sailing Foundation is all about. For nearly two decades we have facilitated sailing lessons for island youth, teaching as many as 100 young sailors a year. We have watched fellow islanders from eight years old to senior citizens learn to sail, improve their skills and decision making, progressing into important folks in their community. Many of our high school sailors have become leaders on their college sailing teams. While still in high school they sail in national level regattas and start giving back to the community by becoming sailing instructors for the summer classes. We have been doing this since 1982 and in that time have built a fleet with a replacement value of more than $100,000.00. The San Juan Island Sailing Foundation (SJISF) is the non-profit organization which owns the sailboats, safety boats, floats and related equipment used by islanders to provide sailing classes on San Juan Island each summer. The Foundation also supports and provides equipment for the high school sailing team. Needless to say, this requires significant financial commitment. And that is what we are asking from you now. We are seeking company sponsors to help support the fleet. For a $250.00 annual contribution we will display your company’s name on the side of the bow of a Vanguard 15 sailboat for one year. You will also receive a picture of “your” boat sailing suitable for display at your business. Please contribute today and keep island youth sailing.
