Sailing Foundation Board Meeting October 2, 2007

Present: Scott Boye, Nigel Oswald, Dez Bridgmon, Mary Blevins, Susan and Peter Risser, Abbie Finney, Marilyn O’Connor

Guests: Pablo Lopez, Catherine Bevens, Pam Gross, Barbara Bevens, Marc Islam

Scott called the meeting to order at 5:35

Dez went to the Breakfast of Champions run by the San Juan Community Foundation and received an award for the Sailing Foundation of $1,000.00 for the US Sailing Level One Training for volunteers so we can send
potential instructors to the training.

Peter thanked Marc Islam for calling the families of sailors in the summer classes about the campout at Cascade Lake and causing a good turnout of families.

No Island Rec report as Sally Kerr is off island.

Mary moved, Peter seconded to approve the minutes of September 4, 2007. Passed.

Treasurer’s report: There is $10,576.69 in the account (after buying a new Vanguard), of which $2,110.00 in memorial funds and $2,952.78 for the sailing team are encumbered.

Peter, Nigel, and Scott from our board and Sally Kerr and Ralph Hahn from Island Rec had a meeting on October 1 about the fees paid by Island Rec to the Sailing Foundation for boat use. (For information: sailing teams from Bainbridge, North Kitsap and Anacortes are operated under local rec. programs, Port Angeles by the local YMCA, Orcas from Sail Orcas, and
Pt. Townsend by the Wooden Boat Foundation.)

Old Business
Sponsorship committee: Abbie has written a draft letter. We might print up a photo and make a nametag for each sponsored boat.

Cascade Lake: The weekend was fine and fun. We need to be scheduling for next year this December. Peter moved, Scott seconded to do it again at the same weekend. (2007 campout was the third weekend in September.)
Passed.

Membership terms report: Board structure discussion will be a subject of the December 1, 2007 retreat.

Pam Gross has put in her requisite three meetings and is up for election to the board. After she stepped outside, Scott moved, Susan seconded to elect Pam Gross to the board for a three year term.
Passed unanimously.

Barbara Bevens has also attended the requisite three meetings and is also up for election to the board. After she stepped outside Scott moved, Susan seconded to elect Barbara Bevens to the board for a three year
term.
Passed unanimously.

Peter, Susan Scott and Dez met with David Halpern of the canoe/kayak club to try to fit all our sailboats and their canoes/kayaks into the too small present building. The net shed redevelopment sould be more
suitable for the various needs of the boating community.

Marilyn said she would put $10,000.00 into the Port of Friday Harbor’s budget to begin the development/design/permit process.

Peter proposed we invite David Halpern to the November meeting.

Winter season outboard service: Scott will see that they get serviced.

Scott moved, Dez seconded that we authorize Mary to consult with an expert of her choice about direct scholarships by non profits to individuals. Passed unanimously.

Scott reported that the Cressy Cup, the National Laser Single Handed Championship will be in Seattle at Shilshole the weekend of October 27 and 28. He and Burk Thomas will be running it. They will use full rigs for men and radial rigs for women.

Roche Harbor donated $500.00 to the Sailing Foundation for the Great Oakes group to help them with their fundraising. On October 16 Scott and the 4 sailors will go to the San Juan Island Yacht Club board, and it is expected that they will also donate.

Meeting adjourned at 6:59 PM.
