Sailing Foundation Board Meeting January 8, 2008

Present: Scott Boye, Pan Gross, Nigel Oswald, Peter
and Susan Risser, Mary Blevins, Dez! Bridgmon, Russel
Asher, Barb Bevens, Peter and Christine Chan,
Catherine Bevens.

Guest: Ralph Hahn from Island Rec

Scott called the meeting to order at 5:32.

Amendments to the December meeting: 1. Rather than the Sailing Foundation having use of the Island Rec bus, it should be the Sailing Team has use of the Island Rec bus. 2. Re the teen class, Island Rec says it could organize such a class.

Peter moved, Barb seconded to approve the December minutes as amended.
Passed.

Treasurer’s report. There is $13,907.28 total, of which $2,110 is in memorial funds, $1,025 is restricted, $2,863.62 is for the sailing team, and $7,908.66 is in general operating fund.

Mary says we have not yet received a bill from David McCauley for reimbursement for the airline tickets to Great Oakes. There were $1,000 in donations, and $772 spent.

Scott reported that there is a new Vanguard 15 in his yard, which comes with a blade bag and a dolly.

Island Rec report. There will be a public meeting in February, a retreat, to work on how to begin the community input on development of the Jackson Beach property.

A meeting for scheduling classes has not happened yet. The tides will be bad this summer, making a path to the beach for the dinghies on their dollies a high priority for the summer classes. We will need to get
that on the Port of Friday Harbor’s agenda for the summer.

Peter and Sally will meet and figure the summer schedule by next meeting.

The prerequisite for instructor class is a boating safety class. Sally will be buying books on which she will get a good price and people can buy them and take the test on line.

We talked about the youth sailing class, for which there is not yet an instructor. It will be from April 16 through 23 May.

We discussed the possibility of removing the sailing team from Island Rec. Peter feels that it is slightly against our partnership building philosophy. We get an administrative advantage from the partnership. But we are not sure about the cost/benefit ratio. Much discussion ensued. Ralph Hahn talked about the fees and the program paying for itself. Nigel suggested we
get an administrative cost per class. Ralph will talk to Sally to get an explanation of the rise in costs. Youth sailing has gone from $100 to $200. After Ralph talks to Sally, he will report to Peter or Scott or
Nigel.

New business. Felipe has tentatively asked for Vanguard 15s for a collegiate regatta Feb. 24 and 25. Scott emailed him back, and we need to hear a response from Felipe.

Patrick Pillsbury will do a fundraiser for us, a movie night at the sail loft in the near future.

Peter moved, Scott seconded to reinstate board members, whose terms expire as follows:

Dez! 2011
Scott 2011
Mary 2009
Marilyn 2009
Susan 2010
Peter 2010
Passed unanimously.

Election of officers: Christine Chan moved, Nigel seconded to continue the present slate of officers.

President: Peter Risser,
Vice President: Scott Boye,
Secretary: Susan Risser,
Treasurer: Mary Blevins.

Passed unanimously.

Pam reported that she, Marilyn, Barb and Mary had a meeting on partnerships. She suggested a paper newsletter to the Island Rec board, school board, and port commissioners to the individuals. Also there
might be a once a year briefing and thank you from the kids from the programs. They also want us to participate somehow in Opening Day of Yachting Season.

Peter asked about boat sponsorships. There is a draft of a letter and Scott will manage it. Funds from the boat sponsorships go to the general fund.

Adjourned 7:13.
