San Juan Sailing Foundation Board Meeting, Nov. 6, 2007
Present: Scott Boye, Dez Bridgmon, Peter and Susan
Risser, Pablo Lopez, Nigel Oswald, Barb Bevens, Peter
and Christine Chan, Abbie Finney, Marilyn O’Connor
Absent: Mary Blevins
Guest: Tony Vivenzio
Scott called the meeting to order at 5:34.
Peter moved, Dez seconded to approve the minutes from the Oct. 2, 2007 meeting. Passed unanimously.
Officers reports: Scott reported on the Cressy Cup, the National Laser Single Handed Championships. Scott ran races and Abbie and Lisa Marsaudon did scorekeeping. They ran 18 races over the two days.
There were 36 sailors from around the country. It ran smoothly.
In 2009 the Northwest District of high school sailors will host the National Team Racing Championships.
On the weekend of the 26th and 27th of April, 2008, Friday Harbor hosts the Double Handed District Championships.
Peter reported that Island Rec has committed for the next two years for the charter fee and will pay the gas for the classes, but will retract the $500 for sailing team travel.
Mary is not here, but she has talked to Chris Forsythe from Kennedy McCulloch to get an answer to our question about donating to individuals. The answer to what non-profits can donate to individuals is very grey. It is traceable back to our mission statement. Tony Vivenzio helped out by telling us about Cindy Sexton of the Secretary of State’s office, who runs
the Charitable Solicitations Division of the Secretary of State’s office. Abbie will help us by calling Cindy and asking her how to get donations to send students off to regattas, etc. without compromising our 501-c-3
status.
Marilyn reported that the net shed renovation project has some money in the budget. A very good start for the Foundation is to present a very broad community desire for the project, including the canoe club’s need for storage and launch space in addition to our needs. Scott says that Nina Le Baron has offered to do a preliminary drawing of the project.
The Vanguards are all stored in the net shed along with the Lasers for the winter.
There is no Island Rec representative, so there is no report.
Dez! invited Tony Vivenzio to the meeting to tell us about how he runs a retreat as a facilitator. He talked about possible methods to use. After his
presentation, he left, and Scott moved, Susan seconded to hire Tony as the facilitator for our upcoming retreat for his offer of $500.00.
Passed unanimously. Dez! will tell him the result of the vote.
Peter wrote out a draft sponsorship solicitation letter and Scott and Abbie will revise it and typeset it.
David McCauley will take the Great Oakes girls to the mainland and to the airport, and pick them up when they return. The Gossoms have given their time share. Bonnie Schmidt’s parents gave the girls their air miles. The girls are leaving with Dez and Abbie for New Orleans for the weekend, whose weather is reported to be 70 degrees and sunny, with 4 to 8 knots of predicted breeze from N to E throughout the weekend.
Peter tried to sign up people for the Island Rec board Nov 15 (third Thursday). Barb will go to the Dec. 6 meeting and Nigel will attend the Dec. 20 meeting.
The retreat will start at 8 A.M. on Dec. 1 and will run until we can’t think any more. Scott moved, Susan seconded to approve the cost of $10/person for catering the retreat. Connie Black will provide lunch.
Passed unanimously.
Scott adjourned the meeting at 6:54.
Next meeting will be at 5:30 at the library on December 4.
