San Juan Sailing Foundation Board Minutes, April 1, 2008

Attending: Scott Boye, Dez Bridgmon, Peter and Susan Risser, Abbie Finney, Pam Gross, Barbara Bevens, Christine and Peter Chan, Nigel Oswald, Marilyn O’Connor

Guests: Evan Anderson and Russell Asher

Absent: Mary Blevins, Pablo Lopez

Scott called the meeting to order at 5:36.

Susan moved, Abbie seconded to approve the minutes as written.
Passed unanimously.

In Mary’s absence, Susan reported that an anonymous donor has given us a very generous gift of $12,000.00. Also the second movie night at the San Juan Canvas Company netted about $100.00.

There is no Island Rec representative in attendance. Peter reports that there are probably not enough sign-ups for Youth Sailing according to his conversation with Sally, but there are still two more days for signing up. Barbara thinks that soccer and la crosse and other spring events are in competition with the youth sailing program, and that two of the potential youth sailors are actually on the sailing team. A lot of discussion ensued about how to draw middle schoolers’ attention to how much fun sailing is.

Nigel thinks that sometime in mid May we might commit to taking people put in Vanguards for test sails to see if there is interest in getting people interested in taking classes. He suggested that high schoolers might each take out a n on sailor and have a race. There is no regatta that weekend, so we could make it an event. Marc Islam could promote it at the Children’s Festival. Dez will make flyers and Barb says that we could even send out information in the middle school newsletters.

Saturday, 17 May was set for the try out of Nigel’s suggestion.
Scott suggested a 4 week race series, an “after work” event, on Thursday nights starting at about 5 and race for an hour and a half. This would tie in right after the practice for the sailing team on those Thursdays: May 22 and 29, and June 5 and 12.

Re moving the dock to Jacksons Beach: Peter will call the Eberharts to see if they would be willing. If not, Abbie will call friends.

Abbie reports we do have a boat for the Children’s Festival. Marc Islam has volunteered to get the boat to the fairgrounds and have it set on a tarp filled with chips. He will run the ‘booth’.

We do not yet know who won the sailing trip on Sally Hawkins’ boat.

Barbara reported that the net shed was a mess. She bought a broom and dustpan and organized a clean up. She thinks we need a tool box and a maintenance person’s tool box.

Dez said many team members went to Orcas and took 8 boats, and found themselves short a number of parts. The team has organized Evan and Hana to do the tool boxes and parts and pieces and get them ready to go. Zack and Catherine are in charge of having boats, parts, and pieces ready for regattas (before and after). They have lists started of parts inventory, and parts needed.

We need 2 new rudders and 1 daggerboard and pins, and other misc. parts. Scott will go and meet with Peter at the net shed at 2:30 Thursday to make sure we have enough parts for complete boats for the upcoming District Championships. Catherine will make the complete list, email it to Scott, and he will order parts. Nigel will be in Portland next weekend and can pick up the parts.

We discussed whether we should buy a couple of “Pro Rigs” for the Lasers so they will be competitive in regattas (like “Wind”). We’ll make it an agenda item for the next meeting.

Peter gave a brief history of the Memorial Funds: Some monies have been donated to the Foundation to honor deceased persons who have been very supportive of the Sailing Foundation. Marilyn moved, Susan seconded that we establish a scholarship fund for either summer classes and/or for instructor training over a period or 4 or 5 years. Passed unanimously.

We talked briefly about the availability of instructor training and encouraging young people to take the classes. Barbara Bevens asked that we set the date for the Lasagna Dinner Fundraiser for some time in May. We agreed, and the date is yet to be determined.

Barbara handed out a list of standing committees and officers.

Peter, Susan and Dez talked about raising prices for memberships to the Sailing Foundation.

Sharon Beach at Kings Marine says she could sell things at cost tomembers of the sailing team.

Meeting adjourned.
