Here are the minutes and agenda for the 5:30 meeting
at the library on Tuesday, July 3.

SAN JUAN SAILING FOUNDATION BOARD MEETING June 5, 2007

Present: Scott Boye, Dez! Bridgmon,, Christine and
Peter Chan, Peter and Susan Risser, Mary Blevins,
Marilyn O’Connor

Guests: Sally Kerr, Pablo Lopez, Evan Anderson,
Russell Asher, Abbie Finney, Nigel

Scott called the meeting to order at 5:45.

Re last month’s minutes, Sally said that Pablo, Caitlin and Evan are assistant instructors rather than teaching assistants and to amend the minutes. Peter moved, Susan seconded to accept the amended minutes.
Passed.

Island Rec report. The classes are filling up. The first float tests are next week. We talked about the youth sailing program and that some of the kids are a bit rustier than the instructor had thought they should be, probably due to the year of inactivity since last summer’s lessons.

We went into executive session and discussed the fact that Abbie has attended the requisite three board meetings and would like to be on the board. Scott moved, Susan seconded to induct her.
Passed unanimously.

Pablo, Evan and Russell all agreed to be potential sailing team members of the board next year. Scott will talk about it further with them.

Russell presented a request for tuition to the Wind Clinic in Hood River. He said that it is really good for the improvement of skills, in that videos are
taken and reviewed with each student on a one to one basis for skill development. It is also good because they develop the skill of sailing in much higher winds than these sailors are used to. The clinic is for Lasers with 4.7 rigs. Pablo and Russell both went last year and spoke eloquently about the value of attending the clinic. The cost is $350.00 for tuition
plus costs of gas and camping fees and food. They are requesting the tuition from the board. The clinic will be July 25, 26, and 27 and will be followed by a regatta the 28th and 29th. They would also need to take 3 of the Lasers and rigs. Scott suggested we on the board discuss it after they leave. Peter asked them all if they would be willing to take the U.S.
Sailing Instructor 1 class, which would benefit the Sailing Foundation as well as themselves. They all said they would.

Marilyn moved, Peter seconded to pay their tuitions and loan them the boats for the Wind Clinic.
Passed unanimously.

Scott said the girls on the team are thinking of going to New Orleans to the Great Oaks Regatta next November. They will need to be fund-raising for this trip.

Dez! Reported that she has talked to Marilyn Nassman about the Solstice Party which will be June 23. Scott moved , Susan seconded we provide El Toros for the party.
Passed unanimously.

Felipe attended the college team racing and double handed regatta in Annapolis. Felipe would like to go to the Pacific Coast Championships for Vanguards in Hood River. Burke Thomas would take some Orcas boats,
too. Scott would encourage some of our sailors to attend. It is at the end of August. Felipe will make a presentation to the board.

Scott has tried to organize the beach log moving party at Jacksons Beach next Sunday.

Treasurers Report. There is $14,707.68 in the bank, of which $2,110.00 are in the memorial funds, $2,199.66 are for the sailing team, and $10,398.00 in the general pot.

Old business. There are 10 day before the grant application is due to the Community Foundation for scholarships for the sailing instructor class. Dez! And Shannon Davis will be working on it. Peter offered to do any necessary leg work.

Peter and Susan and Scott took pictures of the Alliance and the Sea Eagle and Scott made some flyers to be distributed. There is a huge pile of sails in the boat house and Scott is willing to sign up kids for Dollars to Scholars to get the sails on E-Bay.

The Vancouver Lake Regatta will be during graduation and Scott will take anyone who wants to go.

Scott will attend the July 21 Island Rec board meeting.

Nigel brought a check for the sponsorship (of boats) program. Abbie said that Islanders Bank will sponsor one, also.

Art Lohrey talked to Peter about giving interested sailors the opportunity of being apprentices in his boat shop. Art would try to seek scholarships for the program, and see if he can develop the program.

Meeting adjourned at 6:59.

Agenda for the July 3 meeting, which will be at the library as usual.
