San Juan Sailing Foundation Board Meeting August 7 & 21, 2007

Hi. Here are minutes and agenda for the meeting Tuesday the 4th at 5:30 at the library. Bring your completed questionnaires from Dez, please. Susan

San Juan Sailing Foundation Board Meeting August 7, 2007

Present: Scott Boye, Peter and Susan Risser, Dez! Bridgmon, Abbie Finney, Christine Chan, Marilyn O’Connor

Guests: Sally Kerr, Nigel Oswald, Catherine Bevens, Pablo Lopez, Sasha Nollman, Barbara Bevens, Angela Gossom, Bonnie Schmidt, Pam Gross, Heidi Lopez, Caitlin McCauley

Scott started the meeting at 5:37

Pablo reported that the Wind Clinic was wonderful, although he broke a Laser 4.7 top section. He will be looking for a replacement.

Island Rec. report. Sailing classes went well with the exception of the first intro class. More students are needed for the advanced class. Next year we will need 2 new instructors, and in the current pool there is no one who will be 18 by the next summer sessions. No one from Friday Harbor has signed up for the sailing instructor class on Orcas. The instructor class is more complicated now.

One suggestion from the instructors of the women’s class is that it have a 2 weekend component; one weekend in El Toros and a second at Jackson’s Beach, probably in Vanguard 15s. Another suggestion is that we offer one on one instruction for students, not just for women but for adults in general.

Bonnie, Caitlyn, Angela and Catherine are requesting funds to help them go to the Great Oakes Regatta. They request ½ the cost of air fare and the entry fee, which will be about $1,000.00. They have $910 from the Solstice party. They are thinking of a car wash on Shaw Island and a Gumbo Cookoff at Roche Harbor as fundraisers.

Susan told of the instructor thank you BBQ to be held a Percich Pond on Friday, August 10. Scott moved, Susan seconded that the foundation provide burger and buns for the party.
Passed.

Peter moved, Dez seconded to approve the July minutes as written. Passed.

Log moving at J.B. hasn’t happened yet. Dez! will contact Will Turman.

Scott will catch up with Russel about putting the used donated sails on e-bay.

Fundraising: We will probably copy Orcas’ procedure for boat sponsorship. We’ll need a list of names and addresses of possible businesses to contact. Peter and Abbie will put the list together. Dez! will get a copy of the letter of request for sponsorship from Burke Thomas. By Sept. we’d like to have letters and envelopes ready to send.

Susan will get information about Cascade Lake from Mary and Dez! will get a list of kids who took the classes from Sally and we will let parents know about it.

Scott talked about fundraising as done on Orcas. They have a volunteer who accepts, fixes and resells donated boats and that is a gig part of their income. They also do adult private classes and the instructors donate their time for those classes.

Dez! talked about fundraising and passed out a questionnaire and requested that we return them filled out at the next meeting.

Marilyn moved, Susan seconded we induct Nigel Oswald to the board. Passed unanimously.

Re the Great Oakes trip: Scott moved, Susan seconded to fund the girls to the Great Oakes regatta to the tune of about $1,000 total.
Passed unanimously.

We need to discuss the re-up of board members.

Adjourned 7:02.

Special work session on finances, August 21, 2007

Present: Scott Boye, Susan and Peter Risser, Dez! Bridgmon, Mary Blevins, Peter and Christine Chan, Barbara Bevens, Pam Gross, Marc Islam, Abbie Finney.

We looked at the costs of running classes relative to
our boat costs.
Intro $100
Basic $100
Intermediate $145

Scott passed out a list of what other organizations charge for classes in the N.W. area as well as a spread sheet of the fleet/insurance/maintenance costs over the last 5 years. We need to figure out to what extent our board is willing or able to subsidize the
sailing program.

Perhaps we should put some of our brochures at the Family Resource Center to broaden our student base.

Scott suggested that he and Peter get together and make a charter fee structure in the 4 to 5 thousand dollar range, and suggest class prices that more closely mirror other classes, and suggested a stepped approach annually. They will bring this to the board in September and we can discuss it.

We discussed community sailing option possibilities briefly.
