Great Oaks Regatta |
What was the end result? A warm fantastic weekend of sailing! As soon as the cars were in the ferry landing and the girls showed up to jump aboard the smiles never stopped. The weekend was awesome! We had a little bit of trouble the first day after running around looking for a space to stay and not sleeping for over 30 hours, we hadn't eaten in just about that long and New Orleans hasn't put up a lot of street signs since "The Storm" except for all the "One Way" signs. After finding our home for the next few nights we ventured out to the marina. I must say this was the easiest place to find! The girls got in their practice time in the 420's on Lake Ponchatrain in excellent wind conditions. The next day consisted of warm weather and very little wind, before calling the races off mid-way through the day we raced three races in our fleet for a 6 race total day. The sun was warm and blazing while we floated around on the dock. All four girls jumped in one boat and rocked it back to the dock. The scoring for the first day determined the second day of racing. They race committee took the top seven teams in each A and B fleet to create the Gold and Silver fleet for Sunday. Our girls were looking pretty good with the hopes of staying out of last place! Sunday brought cloud cover and 8-10 knots of breeze. 24 races were completed between the two fleets and our girls raced 12, leaving our total score at 101 and kept us out of last. We finished up the weekend in 8th place and were proud of the accomplishment. The girls learned a lot about their starts, how weight effects the movement of the boat, and how a good attitude can change the outcome of any race. I am proud of the goals that the girls set for themselves and for their perseverance through the whole regatta. Even snubbed by the New England teams the girls never showed a frown. Thanks to all the girls that traveled to New Orleans and I hope that this experience will last them a life time! | Membership Renewal |
Why renew my membership? To support the Sailing Foundation and youth sailing on San Juan Island! Your membership dollars are exactly what the Sailing Foundation needs! If it wasn't for the generous donations of many people and businesses in our community the girls would not have made it to New Orleans for the Great Oaks Regatta. Support like that is needed to keep our youth in local and even national regattas. Plus your dollars are spent to keep our 3 fleets of boats in great shape and our Foundation striving to maintain its mission of advancing Sailing in and around San Juan Island. | Thanks Tony Vivenzio | Who is Tony Vivenzio? Why that would be our facilitator for our retreat! We are all looking forward to the annual meeting and we appreciate the help and support of our friend Tony Vivenzio for stepping up and taking on such a huge effort. Tony has helped many companies and non-profits over the past few years achieve their own strategic plans and as a local lawyer that deals with this on a daily basis we felt as a board the he would be the right guy for our plans. The Sailing Foundation is growing and with Tony's help we can put our vision and mission into action by reaching some of our goals. The Foundation is ready to tackle some pretty tough challenges and thanks to Tony he will be able to guide our conversations through the day. Thanks again for the help, Tony! |
