Summer
Classes

How did it go?
We had a fantastic summer!

The best of all waters for dinghy sailing here on San Juan Island is on salty Griffin Bay at Jackson’s Beach or the fresh water Percich Pond. On any given summer afternoon you could see water loaded with boats with wind in their sails. Lots of smiling kids and adults out enjoying the
pleasure of  “messing about in boats”.

Thank you to all who got the chance to get out on the water. All but one class went off with out a hitch. All of the kids that took the classes and the women that were in the adult class said that each class was fun and that they were thankful to the instructors, Island Rec and The Sailing Foundation for the opportunity to learn and get better at sailing!

Why renew my membership?
To support the Sailing Foundation and youth sailing on San Juan Island!

If you are a board member and have not paid your yearly dues, now is the time to get it in. Mary, has requested that I put in a little blurb so that you will all be reminded. Remember your memberships whether you are a board member or not is important. Your annual dues is what keeps the Foundation afloat. If you need to know what the membership costs then click here. NEW Board Members Who is our president?
Why that would be Peter Risser, still!

Peter Risser and several other board members have decided to sign up for three more years! Thank you to all who have dedicated all those years to supporting the Sailing Foundation. As for all the new members we pass out a big THANK YOU for your new energy and excitement for the Sailing Foundation. Our new members in the last year include Peter and Christine Chan, Abbey Finney, Nigel Oswald, Pam Gross and Barbara Bevens.

Each of the new members will be asked to add to the Foundation in there own way and the Chan's have a greed to take on the membership project. This is not an easy job but the Chan's are a very capable team. As the months roll by we will fill you in on the others and what they have chosen to do.
Grant
Money

Grants? Grants for what?
Thank you Community Foundation!

This year at the Breakfast of Champions the San Juan Island Community Foundation awarded the Sailing Foundation a $1000.00 grant for US Level One Instructor Course for four of our volunteers.

We want to thank the Community Foundation in our newsletter for their great work in the community and the help that they give when we or any non-profit on island need help! Thanks again!

Great Oaks Update

Great Oaks, What is that?
A national regatta in New Orleans!

As most of you know, four of our high school sailing team members are going to New Orleans in a couple weeks for the National Great Oaks Regatta. This is a regatta that will give our four girls a chance to sail against some of the best sailors in the nation and give them a chance to sail 420's. These vessels are 14 foot sloop rigged boats that require two people. Our girls will have the opportunity to exchange drivers and crew so that all will have a chance to experience the big fleet at the start line.

All this has not been possible without the help of many people. We want to Thank the parents that have helped contribute to the New Orleans Fund: Burk and Cookie Gossom for the housing. Bonnie's Mom, Andrea and dad Carl for the Rental Car. The Sailing Foundation for part of the air fare and entry fee. To Roche Harbor and the San Juan Island Yacht Club for the rest of the air fare.

It is not an easy task to raise this much money but thanks to all of you we made it! All of the money has come in for our trip and we will be sending written formal thank you's with pictures and a wrap up of the trip when we return. In the mean time check out the Sailing Team web page for the upcoming blog page link for trip details and updates from the girls! SJIS Team

Thanks again!

Dec. 1st
Retreat

Will there be napping?
NO! This is a working retreat!

Please mark the date of December 1st as the annual retreat for Foundation Board Members. This is a retreat that you don't want to miss! We will be hitting the fund raising issue very hard and discussing new goals and future projects. If you are unable to make it please contact Susan Risser so that we can make sure you get a copy of the minutes. If you are not on the board and you want us to bring up a topic then email us so that we can get it on the agenda!

If you would like to keep up on what the board members are currently working on and the minutes of the retreat then click on out home page for the last few months meeting minutes. We can always use public input. Got something to add or say to our on-going discussions? Feel free to send your comments to us! SJISF Home
